These cabernet vines are perched on the hillside above the wine caves being the first block that Tony Truchard sees each morning and the last he sees at the end of his day from the bedroom window and, as a result, are meticulously manicured. The hillside is gently sloping to the southwest to capture the strong afternoon sun. With abundant warmth and the owner’s particular eye, this block wants for nothing. The resulting wine, much like the vineyard it hails from, is firm, polished, and full of life. Both vine and wine we expect to be around for many years to come.
Vineyard: The Truchard Estate Vineyard is located in the Carneros region of the Napa Valley. It is 400 acres of hills and valleys which contain a variety of soils: clay, shale, sandstone, limestone, volcanic ash and rock. The combination of terrain, geology, and marine-moderated temperatures, provides ideal conditions for wine-growing. In 2009, 2 acres of Clone 169 Cabernet Sauvignon were planted above the Truchard Vineyards wine cave. These vines grow in light clay soils and produce a distinct wine that has unique floral aromas and lush flavors of plum, berry, and spice.
Winemaking: All of the fruit was gently destemmed and crushed, then inoculated with Pasteur Red yeast. The fermentation was pumped-over twice daily, with the temperature peaking at 88º F. The wine was aged for 20 months in French oak barrels (45% new). Rackings occurred every 4 months until bottling. This wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. It is drinkable now, but will continue to develop over the next 10-12 years.
